Summary

Margaret Atwood meets Buffy in these funny, warm, and furious stories of women at their breaking points, from Hellenic times to today。

Cassandra may have seen the future, but it doesn't mean she's resigned to telling the Trojans everything she knows。 In this ebullient collection, virgins escape from being sacrificed, witches refuse to be burned, whores aren't ashamed, and every woman gets a chance to be a radioactive cockroach warrior who snaps back at catcallers。 Gwen E。 Kirby experiments with found structures--a Yelp review, a WikiHow article--which her fierce, irreverent narrators push against, showing how creativity within an enclosed space undermines and deconstructs the constraints themselves。 When these women tell the stories of their triumphs as well as their pain, they emerge as funny, angry, loud, horny, lonely, strong protagonists who refuse be secondary characters a moment longer。 From "The Best and Only Whore of Cym Hyfryd, 1886" to the "Midwestern Girl [who] is Tired of Appearing in Your Short Stories," Kirby is playing and laughing with the women who have come before her and they are telling her, we have always been this way。 You just had to know where to look。

**I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review。**When I started this book, I expected something completely different from what I got。 To be clear, this isn't a bad thing! It's a great book of lyrically written short stories that fall around the theme of the tragedies (and powers) of being of a woman。 Taken on their own, there are some amazing ones in this book that stick with you。 The shorts take place over a wide range of time — we have Ancient Troy, the 1800s, modern day。 Th **I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review。**When I started this book, I expected something completely different from what I got。 To be clear, this isn't a bad thing! It's a great book of lyrically written short stories that fall around the theme of the tragedies (and powers) of being of a woman。 Taken on their own, there are some amazing ones in this book that stick with you。 The shorts take place over a wide range of time — we have Ancient Troy, the 1800s, modern day。 The way the author writes the plight of women and how we wrestle with the things we should want versus what we want, the things we should have, the way we should be treated, is very poetic。However, if you went in - like me - expecting to get some spin on the seeress Cassandra and the things she saw (but wasn't believed about), then you'll be disappointed。 While a short about Cassandra opens the book and leads in very well to the second short, it's very easy to quickly forget that these are supposed to be things that Cassandra saw。 。。。more

Really enjoyed most of the stories, easy to read given the format。 not sure if short story books are my fave but I did enjoy and this would probably be my favorite in the genre if I read more because of the theme behind it all。

~ ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion ~Great way to start the new year。 A women powered collection filled with engrossing short stories。 Always a great reminder that women are pretty bad ass。

A delightful and unusual collection of short stories largely about women。 I suspect I'm not the only one who smiled more than once while reading this。 Kirby's wit is acerbic, to be sure, but it's never mean。 The Yelp review is not a unique construct for a short story these days but she's brought something new to the table by making it not about food but instead a failing marriage。 Teeth! Grocery lists! And Trojans! Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC。 Read these one at a time- they aren't linked- to A delightful and unusual collection of short stories largely about women。 I suspect I'm not the only one who smiled more than once while reading this。 Kirby's wit is acerbic, to be sure, but it's never mean。 The Yelp review is not a unique construct for a short story these days but she's brought something new to the table by making it not about food but instead a failing marriage。 Teeth! This collection of stories covers mythical women from the past as well as the present。 Starting with Cassandra who foretold the fall of the Trojans, only to be ignored, now Trojan is best known as a condom。 No silently suffering victims here。 These women have agency and waste little time suffering fools。 Far out, feminist and funny。 The audio book is perfectly done by a cast of readers。

A short story collection full of feminist speculative stories- of course I am going to love it。 Already on my list for my favorite book of 2022。 “That’s the thing about places you know too well, and people—there’s an old-self waiting to take you back, to sneak up behind you and clap a formaldehyde-soaked cloth to your mouth before you know to scream。”

An incisive exploration of the impositions of patriarchy that still manages to be totally delightful!!! Not sure how she pulled it off, but I'm so glad she did。 An incisive exploration of the impositions of patriarchy that still manages to be totally delightful!!! I always felt bad for the Cassandra of Greek myth。 She knew what was going to happen but is cursed to never be believed。 If only the Trojans had listened! The resentment and frustration she must have felt pour out in the first story out of the gate in Gwen E。 Kirby’s electrifying collection, Shit Cassandra Saw。 The stories here are full of things that people wish they could say。 It’s a lot of fun to watch the sparks fly。。。Read the rest of my review at A Bookish Type。 I received a free copy of th I always felt bad for the Cassandra of Greek myth。 She knew what was going to happen but is cursed to never be believed。 If only the Trojans had listened! This story collection is funny and cutting and smart and bold。 Kirby shows the power that exists inside of and between women, and the ways we have the keep surviving despite everything that wants to knock us down。

As fun as it is furious, SHIT CASSANDRA SAW rewrites womanhood with a cast of complex, contradictory, brave, and bonkers heroines as likely to skewer you with a cutlass as they are to poorly re-tile your bathroom。 I want to be friends with all the women in this collection who refuse to be anything other than exactly who they are。 A barnburner of a book that will set you ablaze with its clear-eyed brilliance。

Sarah High

Wacky, spiteful, and really fun collection of short stories。 Give us more, Gwen Kirby!

recently read the title story online which has a fucking great title btw and it was just so good and so clever。 it got me hyped up for this collection。

#ShitCassandraSaw #NetGalleyWow。。。 just wow。 I am not a fan of short stories, but I did enjoy several of these。 I can see myself recommending this book to several readers who love short stories and books about women。

Ananda

This collection is wild (in a very very good way)。 You will find women with atomic cockroach superpowers, yelp reviews, instructions on how to tile your bathroom, midwestern women tired of being characters in short stories。 This book is beautifully written, hilarious, moving, so smart, and insightful。 What a beautiful imagination。 Highly recommend it。
